Mimoun El Walid During his first years at the University of Fes, he
started to write Amazigh (Berber) songs with thought-provoking texts and with
- in many cases - slow rhythms. In 1980 his album Ajjaj
("thunder") came out. Some of the songs became deep rooted in his
people's hearts. The Moroccan government feared his popularity and prohibited
Ajjaj, which was however secretly sold. After taking part in an
illegal demonstration, he was jailed and then fired from the university. The Rifans had almost forgotten all about Mimoun
when he made a real comeback in 1986 with the album Ametluâ ("the
vagabond"). Ametluâ which could be sold without any restrictions
became a bestseller. In the beginning of 1997, Mimoun El Walid proved his
virtuosity again when he brought out the album Tayyut
("fog"). Because of the permanent economic crisis and the
lack of cultural and linguistic rights in Morocco, Mimoun El Walid left for
the Netherlands in 1991. Back in Morocco in 1994, he left again for the
Canary Islands in 1997 and established himself in Belgium in 1998. Since then
he plays in concerts in the Western European cities where many Rifans live. Mimoun El Walid published in 1997 his first
collection of novels, Tinfardjas: tinfas tiqudain. |
